Piles of pillows. Tons of trim. Sparse tailoring. Or pintucked pleats. Whatever your personal bedding preference is, there's an interior designer — and a luxury bedding brand — capable of bringing it into your home. Browse four popular bedding styles and find the one (or ones!) that are right for you and your home.
Modern minimalist
Embrace the ethos of less is more by opting for clean lines, muted tones, and uncluttered spaces. Invest in high-thread-count linens with subtle geometric patterns, and complement them with plush, monochromatic throws and accent pillows. Designers like Alex Yanke of Westbourne Studio can guide you in creating a serene ambiance by carefully selecting minimalist elements and ensuring a harmonious balance between sophistication and simplicity.
As Alex shares, “When choosing bedding for a client, we always prioritize comfort. We ask clients to shop for mattresses first as most of our beds are custom built and mattress dimensions may vary. Later, we dive into a conversation about linens. Every client is different and our approach is bespoke. At the end of the day, we care more about the client’s comfort than the aesthetics of the top sheet, fitted sheet, etc. And one reason we are not largely concerned with the look of the sheet set is because we aim to achieve a minimalist, contemporary style in our bedrooms by employing oversized bed covers. Typically we custom make the bedcover in luxurious, heavyweight linen to drape effortlessly over the entire bed. Folding the bedcover over the pillows at the head of the mattress and allowing the edges to pool on the floor at each side of the bed frame creates a monochromatic effect that is at once simple and dramatic. To introduce contrast, we may include a lumbar pillow or additional throw blanket.”

Lived-in and charming
Infuse your bedroom with warmth and nostalgia by incorporating distressed fabrics, vintage-inspired prints, and layered textures. Mix and match sumptuously soft duvets with throw pillows that share a common thread of charm.
Collaborating with designer Sara Deane of Sara Deane Interiors lets clients strike the right balance between lived-in coziness and curated elegance, ensuring that every piece tells a story and contributes to the inviting aura of your personal haven. “My approach to bedding is more neutral than people might expect,” shares Sara. “I like white bedding against a lot of patterns and colors because I think it makes the room pop, and the bedding look extra crisp. I like to use a coverlet with a duvet folded at the end of the bed. The coverlet can be a patterned quilt or a simpler mattelasse – I like to give people blanket options when they sleep. Not everyone likes a big, warm duvet!” As for Sara’s go-to brands, she suggests Matouk bedding, and, for a budget-friendly option, white sheeting from Lands' End. “It looks great, and is so soft. For a splurge, Leontine Linens has beautiful embroidered bedding that can become an heirloom for later generations.”

Natural organic elements
Connect with nature by choosing sustainable materials and earthy tones. Opt for organic cotton linens adorned with nature-inspired patterns to evoke a sense of tranquility. An interior designer with expertise in neutral design can guide you in selecting environmentally friendly elements and curating a space where every detail, from bedding to accent pieces, aligns with the principles of luxury and sustainability.
Designer Rita Donahoe of Rita Chan Interiors shares her approach: “When we are designing a bed we are always focused on comfort, health (for both our clients and the earth), beauty, and honoring the importance of rest by evoking a sense of peace. I tend to prefer a more minimal, natural and clean look. This often means primarily white bedding on the foundation of the bed. I also love a plush, cozy feeling so will often layer another duvet or quilt at the end of the bed, which can either be another white cover, or a subtle pattern or color.” As for color, she shares, decorative pillows provide a chic accent, particularly when “coordinated with the bottom layer if it has pattern or color. My personal favorite is a combination of crisp and relaxed textures, with a white cotton duvet cover on the main bed, folded linen duvet at the base, matching linen shams at the head and a decorative pillow in front of the linen shams.” Some of her favorite brands include Coyuchi, Parachute, The Citizenry, Boll & Branch.
To bring these trends to life in your own space, consult with a designer who can tailor these concepts to suit your personal style and preferences. It's not just about following trends or finding the perfect set of sheets (although we do love the right set!). It's about creating a narrative within your living space that resonates with your lifestyle and brings joy to your everyday moments.
