A serene Westport, Connecticut, home bears the signature imprint of designer Steph Viesta. With a down-to-earth color palette, clean lines, and natural textures, the residence embodies understated elegance — a fitting blend that reflects the region’s own vibe.
Steph aimed to craft a home that blended sophistication and comfort, capturing the taste of her clients, a Connecticut husband and wife. The goal was simple, but not necessarily easy: "to reinvent the home, modernizing architectural details throughout," shares the designer of her task.
Overcoming landscaping challenges.
While the design vision was clear, the verdant location did pose some challenges. "Living in the hills of Westport meant the property was situated on land with impressive, mature trees. But [it] also meant there was a lack of natural light on the back side of the house. We needed to reinvent the exterior wall in the family room to incorporate a wall of windows to let the light shine in," she explains. "The home features an open concept floor plan where all the spaces connect, so it was important that the design of each room speaks to [the] other."
The homeowners fully trusted this vision. "Our client gave us full creative freedom to run with the design; incorporating quality, timeless pieces, an organic color palette and a layered approach," shares Steph.
The project also posed an opportunity for some creative collaborations. "We collaborated with the talented ladies of Deux Femmes to develop custom and unique wall finishes throughout the home," notes Steph. "Each treatment was tailored to compliment the surrounding materials in the rooms."
It's a sentiment that mirrors her overall design philosophy. "We incorporate natural materials that patina and age gracefully in every home we design," she reflects. "From limestone flooring, bronze accents and vintage furniture, I believe there should be a sense of warmth and history in every home."
